family-eating-dinner2-lgI've heard recently that eating smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day is better than eating three square meals when it comes to weight loss.

Eating more often is supposed to keep your metabolism charged and your body constantly burning calories. But a new study shows that we may have gotten that wrong: eating three meals a day may be better for weight loss than grazing. Eating three bigger meals may stave off hunger more effectively than nibbling throughout the day.

"There's a lot of lay press about eating frequency," Leidy, who is now at The University of Missouri in Columbia, told Reuters Health. While there's a widespread perception that it's better to eat little meals more often, she added, "these mini-meals everyone is talking about don't seem to be as beneficial as far as appetite control."

The study also showed that larger meals high in protein were better at warding off hunger by making people full fuller, longer. Scientists were quick to note, however, that by "high in protein" they didn't mean an Atkins-type diet. The Atkins Diet - exclusively protein - is unhealthy and not a good solution for long-term weight loss. Always include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.

What's your routine? Do you eat three meals a day or do you prefer smaller ones? Have a weight-loss secret that works? We've love to hear from you below!
