Strength TrainingIf you're like most people and follow the natural rhythm of the seasons, you probably slow down a bit during the winter. Runners, cyclists, hikers, swimmers, and other athletes/exercisers often find themselves taking advantage of the cold temperatures and snow to let their bodies recover from three seasons of training.

While we don't stop working out entirely, (bad idea) it's perfectly normal and healthy to give your body a bit of a break during the frigid months so you're ready to come back with a vengeance in the spring. If you find yourself cutting back on your training, (but still maintaining) here are some great ways to plan ahead for an active spring.

8 Ways to Plan Now for an Active Spring

1. Inspect your gear. Now's the time to check your running shoes and other gear to see if a new pair (or new bike) should be added to your Christmas list.

2. Check your workout apparel. If your running shorts have seen better days, (like days when they didn't have holes in them) add that to your list, too. You can get great deals on fitness apparel during the winter - and all-year round at Sierra Trading Post.

3. Don't give up entirely. Maintain your basic fitness - even if it means going to the gym and working out on the treadmill or stationary bike a few times a week. Spring training will be that much easier if you maintain your fitness during the winter.

4. Set fitness goals for spring. Now is the time to set goals for the coming year and research any races you might want to run or ride in 2010.

5. Try a new sport. Skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all great ways to stay fit during the winter but you could also join a gym with a climbing wall, go ice skating, join an indoor volleyball or basketball team or take up swimming.

6. Strength train. In the spring, when all you want to do is trail run or ride your bike, lifting weights isn't a priority. The winter is the perfect time to start a strength training program at your local gym to build strength for spring training.

7. Catch up on indoor activities. Read that book you've been meaning to get to or that stack of magazines that piled up on your coffee table this fall. Try winter cleaning instead of spring cleaning so you don't have to waste time indoors when the weather warms up.

8. Give your mind a workout. Take a class or course in something you've always wanted to learn. Expand your horizons during the winter - taking a break from physical fitness is a great time to step up your mental fitness.
