Angel Island State Park Could Close Under New LegislationAs California's state budget dives deeper into deficit, the future of California's state parks is being called into question. Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed closing 80% of California's state parks in an effort to save over $200 million.

The only parks that would remain open under the new legislation are parks that generate enough revenue on their own to operate without government assistance, like Hearst Castle or San Luis Reservoir. The rest of the state parks, which are unable to operate on entry and camping fees alone, would be forced to close. 1,500 people (or more) would be laid off.

"We've never been in as serious a predicament as we are facing right now. It is potentially devastating," said state parks spokesman Roy Stearns.

Closing the parks would be devastating not only to the people of California, but to the parks themselves. Parks are essential for recreation, but also for the protection of wildlife. Without rangers or officials present, there's concern that some people will vandalize park property and poach or otherwise harm wildlife.

Rangers, park managers and legislators are worried that with almost no supervision across 1.5 million acres of parklands, it is almost certain there will be vandalism, animals poached and a high risk of wildfires from trespassers.

The legislation has yet to be passed and lawmakers are still trying to find alternatives, like raising fees, closing parks in the winter and partnering with non-profit groups. But if a viable alternative can't be found by July 1st, there's a chance your favorite California state park could be closed come Labor Day, 2009 (because summer camping reservations have soared this year, the closures wouldn't take place until September).

How important are state parks to you? What could/should California do to ensure their parks stay open?
