Long distance hikers and backpackers will be excited about this news - a new trekking trail is under construction in South Africa that will span the mountainous region of the Cape.
The trail is called the Rim of Africa and is modeled after established long-distance treks like the Continental Divide Trail and the famous Appalachian Trail.
The Rim of Africa trail will be 650 km upon completion, requiring about 48 days to hike from beginning to end. (For those of us who only get two weeks off a year, the trail will also be broken up into four sections that will be hike-able in 10-12 days each.) There's also a possibility of connecting the Rim of Africa with other trails, making the total distance 1,200 km.
If you'd like to be one of the first to hike the new Rim of Africa trail, there are spots available for preview hikes next year on Oct. 4-15, Oct. 11-22, and Oct. 18-29. You can register to hike the first leg of the trail, from the Cederberg Wilderness area on the Cape's West Coast to the Outeniqua Mountains, on the trail's website.
Thanks to The Adventure Blog for the heads up on this new trail!
