Spring is almost upon us and summer isn't far behind. It's time to lose that extra winter weight and get moving again.
So what's the absolute best way to get in shape for summer?
Train for a race!
Now is the ideal time to train for a spring or summer race. May and June offer many opportunities nationwide to compete in a running race, a trail running race, a cycling race or a triathlon.
Not only will you get in shape by training for a spring race (nothing gets you in shape faster than running or cycling four days a week), you'll have a lot of fun, too. It's not easy, but nothing beats the feeling of working towards a goal and crossing the finish line on race day. It's exhilarating.
If you've never competed in a race before, start with something manageable. Training to run a 10K, or even a 5K, is a great way to jump start your fitness. If you ran a 10K last year, challenge yourself and train for a half-marathon or a full marathon this year. If you don't want to run, find a cycling race that will challenge you. If you like the idea of cross-training, compete in a triathlon and swim, ride and run your way to swimsuit season. [You can also walk a 5k or 10k.]
Challenge yourself. You'll be amazed what your body can do (and how good it will feel) when you push it.

This is the first race I'm doing this year. What about you?
