Bill Wright of Colorado just completed The Long's Peak Project, his impressive quest to climb Long's Peak via 12 different routes in 12 months over the course of one calendar year.
Anyone who's familiar with Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park knows this is no easy feat, particularly when you attempt to climb year-round. Winter conditions on the 14,259-foot peak are no joke.
While there are close to 100 different ways to summit Longs, people usually take the most popular, and only non-technical route up - the Keyhole Route. Wright took the Keyhole with a 10-year old companion in September. All 11 other climbs were of a more technical and demanding nature.
In January, it was a solo climb up the Trough. In February, Wright took the Loft Route. The Glacier Gorge Traverse, Kiener's Route, and Casual Route were also on the list. He had only one failed attempt - up the Diamond in March. His last climb, on December 6th was via Keplinger's Couloir on the south face - a difficult route, especially in December. When all was said and done, it's estimated he climbed a total of 80,000 vertical feet. See his website for the entire list of routes taken.
