Dirty_Water_boy.jpgThis past Saturday marked World Water Day and since then I've been doing a lot of thinking about what life must be like without water.

It's hard for me to imagine not having water at the ready. I can't fathom having to walk 4 miles every morning to fetch a bucket of filthy water from a small pond where the local livestock bathes and then walking 4 miles back to my village with that bucket full of dirty water on my head, knowing it will be my family's only source of water for the day.

Yet that's what nearly one-third of the world's population is having to do each and every day. Because the water is so filthy, people are catching dysentery, typhoid fever and other intestinal infections. The more I read about this issue, the more shocked I become. Everyone should have access to clean water.

More often than not, they could if they had the right tools. They need water wells and pumps. They need to be educated on how to drill and maintain them. There are several charitable organizations that make it their mission to provide water to people living in water crisis areas. Healing Hands International, Water Aid America, and Mercy Corps are examples of organizations dedicated to helping solve this very real problem.

They're worth checking out - even the smallest gift could help bring fresh water to a thirsty child who desperately needs it.
