Eco-Runners Make Running Green and Meaningful

If you're a runner, chances are you prefer to run outside every chance you get. And if you run outside, chances are you've probably seen your fair share of garbage and litter along the route, road, or trail.
Have you ever wanted to do something about it? Sam Huber did... and does. An ultra runner who clocks 40 - 60 miles a week, Huber decided he wanted to make his running time more meaningful. He saw the value in helping beautify the trails he runs and realized that the environment was just as big a part of his passion for running as the running itself. And he hated to see his environment strewn with litter. So, he decided to carry a bag with him and pick up trash a long the way. He dubbed it "eco-running."
Huber defines an eco-runner as "someone who combines their passion for running and fitness with environmental conservation and sustainability." Anyone can be an eco-runner. All you have to do is pick up any trash you might see during your run. (You could also be an eco-walker or an eco-hiker.)
If you're in training or don't like the thought of stopping several times during your run, try to set a special run aside, maybe once a week, to devote to eco-running instead of trying to improve your time. Consider it volunteering for the environment, because that's exactly what it is.
Huber's website, Running 4 More, outlines the reasons for eco-running, the benefits of eco-running and inspiration to get you going.
Carry a canvas or organic cotton bag for a double dose of eco-friendliness.
