We first mentioned Yves Rossy back in September of 2008 after he successfully flew over the English Channel strapped to a jet wing.
But the Swiss daredevil, also known as "Fusion Man," wasn't so lucky in his latest attempt with the jet wing.
Though his carbon composite jet wing, equipped with 4 kerosene-fueled jet engines, can travel at speeds of 185mph, it failed him as he tried to fly from Morocco to Spain over the Strait of Gibraltar.
This particular area, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, is prone to high winds that often change direction suddenly. The fickle weather may have played a part in the accident but representatives note engine failure most likely contributed to the failure of Rossy's flight. He had to ditch into the cold waters after only about five minutes into the flight.
"The good news is that he is fine," said Stuart Sterzel, spokesman for sponsors Webtel.mobi, told reporters on a beach outside this southern Spanish town, where Rossy was supposed to land. "He gave the thumbs-up sign through the door of the helicopter," said Sterzel.
Though his latest flight was ultimately a failure, Rossy will most likely not be deterred from future attempts. In addition to flying across the English Channel, he has also flown the jet wing over the Alps. No doubt he'll be at it again soon.
"We are very proud of him," said Sterzel. "We are extremely satisfied with his attempt but if something is easy it's not a challenge."
