How to Save on Winter Camping Last week we posted 10 Winter Camping Tips, an article with great advice on how to make the most of a winter camping trip. Because winter camping requires a little extra gear, this week we have two tips on How to Save on Winter Camping.

We'd also love to give you a $50 gift card to jumpstart your savings. If you know any other smart ways to save on winter camping, leave a tip below (click Read More and scroll down to leave your tip in the comments section). We’ll award one $50 gift card to our favorite tipster.

How to Save Money on Winter Camping

1. Save 35-70% off winter camping gear at Sierra Trading Post. Purchasing quality, long-lasting brand name overstock winter camping gear from Sierra Trading Post instead of buying from a regular retail outfitter can save you hundreds of dollars. We've got everything you need, from tents to sleeping bags to backpacks and apparel - all at much lower prices than you'll find elsewhere.

2. Choose your gear wisely. Instead of buying a winter tent and a summer tent, choose a 4-season tent suitable for use in all seasons. If a down winter sleeping bag isn't in your budget, save money by choosing a bag with synthetic fill rated for the coldest temperature you expect to experience (for winter camping we recommend a bag rated between 10 degrees below zero and 15 degrees above zero). See our Tent Buying Guide and Sleeping Bag Guide for more information.

WINNER UPDATE: Congratulations, ChewyBees - we've chosen your tip as our favorite. Layering with high quality outdoor apparel is always advisable:

A key to any season, but particularly important in winter is an outer shell of clothing that is both wind and weather proof. You would be amazed at how much warmer and comfortable you will be if this is the case. If you get wet in any way, feet, legs, hair, you name it, you will have a hard time drying out and be miserable. Invest in good outer shells and shoes, and what’s underneath can actually be lightweight and layerable, so from morning chill to afternoon sun to evening campfire you can adjust and still stay dry.

Thank you to everyone else who entered! We got some great tips!
