Inaugural Wolf Hunt Too Successful

We posted a few weeks ago about the proposal that's allowing limited wolf hunting in Montana and Idaho. Well, it looks like it's going to be easier than people thought to fill the kill quotas.
Hunting started Sept. 15th in four small districts of Montana including the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, and already nine wolves have been killed (limit in this particular area is 12). If wolves continue to be hunted and killed at this rate, the statewide quota of 75 may be filled before the statewide hunt can begin on Oct. 25th.
Wildlife officials are a bit shocked that the wolves aren't proving more elusive.
Carolyn Sime, wolf program coordinator for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, told the Billings Gazette: "We didn't think wolves would be that vulnerable to firearms harvest. The uncertainty is why we went with the low quota."
