In an attempt to go green, the New York Police Department is trading their motorcycle fleet in for electric scooters. The NYPD will begin road testing four energy efficient scooters next month to determine effectiveness.
Not only are the Vectrix scooters more environmentally friendly than motorcycles, they're also assembled locally (in the U.S.). And they're the first government-certified scooters approved for use on each and every road in the country.
The new 'NYPD Green' scooter brigade will be able to travel up to 60mph and 68 miles on a single charge. But what they're really excited about is how much quieter the scooters are than gasoline-powered motorcycles. Now if only they would do something about those noisy sirens...
In other efforts to boost the greenery of the city, New York also recently announced plans for a free wooden bike-share program on Governor's Island. Mayor Bloomberg is hoping the program will curb bike theft, get people pedaling and provide a model for a future citywide program.
I think all cities should offer bike-share programs, don't you? And imagine how quiet it would be if we all drove scooters...
