BBQ_Grill.jpgMemorial Day weekend is almost here. In just a few short hours we'll be enjoying the first long (unofficial) weekend of the summer.

For many, Memorial Day is opening weekend for camping, hiking, and boating. For others, the weekend calls for road trips to see family, attend weddings, or visit friends. And more than likely, at some point this weekend we'll all be enjoying a BBQ of some kind. Be it backyard or campsite, carnivorous or vegetarian, the BBQ is as American a tradition as any.

Unfortunately, soaring oil and food costs have also become a tradition as of late. The average American BBQ (and grocery bill in general) is going to be quite a bit more costly this year than last. It's more important now than ever to shop wisely and avoid waste. Here are some great tips to help you save a bit on that rising grocery bill and keep more money in your pocket for the fun stuff...

How to Save Money On Your Grocery Bill:

1. Make a list (and check it twice). This may be the most important tip of all. When done properly, the list serves as both a guide and an excuse to use blinders in the snack aisle. Once your list is prepared, agree that you will not venture from it no matter how shiny the package is on those cookies you don't need. Trust in the list.

2. Never, I repeat never, go to the grocery store hungry. Most of us know this but it's worth repeating. Shopping for food when you're hungry is like visiting a toy store when you're five - you'll want everything. Not a good idea.

3. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store to avoid impulse foods. Grocery stores know you better than you think they do - they know what you need, what you like but don't need, what you buy on impulse, and where to place everything to take advantage of your appetite. Staples like milk, bread, eggs, meat, and produce make up the perimeter of the store. Most of the stuff in the middle is processed and unnecessary. Avoid walking the aisles and you'll avoid impulse traps.

4. Buy in bulk, but don't waste. Buying in bulk can mean significant savings if you know you'll use it all. Another option is to team up with a neighbor, friend or family member and split bulk purchases to get the most bang (or toilet paper) for your buck.

5. Look for discount coupons and shop strategically. Remembering to bring your coupons to the store can be a challenge, but one that really pays off. Even if you have to do a little homework, coupons are worth the time and can take a big bite out of your bill.

6. Request a dish to pass. If you're throwing a BBQ, ask each guest to bring a dish to pass. This is a great way to add variety to the table without breaking the bank.

A great Memorial Day is all about enjoying time with friends or family and remembering the reasons for the celebration. Whatever you have planned, we wish you a wonderful and safe weekend!
