Sponsored by Backpacker Magazine, climbing challenge Summit for Someone raises money for Big City Mountaineers, a mountaineering adventure group for at-risk kids.

If you're a mountain climber, or would like to be, and want to use your summit skills to send at least 5 inner-city teenagers on an outdoor mentoring trip (while having the adventure of a lifetime yourself), here's your chance.

The mission of Big City Mountaineers, based in Denver, CO, is simple. Their website states that they "enhance the lives of under-resourced urban teens through transformative outdoor experiences." If you're fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the outdoors regularly, then you understand the goals of this organization and how influential it must be in these kids' lives.



Here's how it works:

1. You choose a climb you'd like to take. There are 17 peaks on the list with expeditions ranging from beginner to advanced. The three climb categories are alpine rock, glacier, and expedition. There are also women-only climbs.

2. Make the pledge donation for your climb. You can either choose to donate directly or to raise the money for your climb. The Summit For Someone website has fundraising tools and a customizable donation sheet to aid your efforts.

3. Start training for your climb. Summit for Someone has training programs tailored to each climb category so you can start getting your body into summit shape.

4. Take your climb and send at least 5 teenagers on a life-changing mountaineering trip in the summer of 2009 with the money you raised.

Registration for 2009 Summit For Someone opens on October 15th, 2008. Space is limited and trips fill up fast, so sign up soon to make a difference!
