When most people travel from Fort Collins, Colorado to Steamboat Springs (also in Colorado), they drive a car. But a select set of restless individuals find it more enjoyable to run there. Some may call them crazy, but we just think they're cool. They're participants in the Wild West Relay and they recently ran 195 miles over Rabbit Ears Pass and the Continental Divide to soak in the natural hot springs of Steamboat.
The relay is a two-day race where teams of 6 and teams of 12 take turns completing the 36 legs of the journey. Some run during the day, some run through the night, and no one gets any sleep. A friend of ours, Javier Cortez, sent us this photo of his team at the finish line. We've got a video, too.
Almost makes you want to run 200 miles, doesn't it?
Here's Javier's story:
"195 miles of beautiful scenery in Colorado and Wyoming. The Wild West Relay of 2007 was the event of the summer. Our team was comprised of men and women, novice and expert runners. We were able to finish the race just under 34 hours. Not only was the event fun, but the weather was about as good as the summer weather gets in Colorado or Wyoming. I was so excited about completing all three of my legs, that I told our team captain I wanted to do this race next year!"
