Zero Energy HOmes in ThailandDevelopers in Malaysia are stepping it up when it comes to eco-friendly home design.

A new development in Kuala Lumpur is claiming it won't just have energy-efficient homes, but that it will have zero-energy homes.

Bird Island, a new eco-friendly development, sponsored a contest called YTL Green Homes Competition and challenged architects to submit designs for six eco-friendly homes. Graft Labs submitted this strangely beautiful design, claiming that the home itself requires no energy.

The home will be constructed using various energy-efficient designs including a lightweight bamboo frame that sways along with the breeze and an airy, slotted roof made of environmentally-friendly (and light-reflective) fabric that reduces the need for air conditioning. The walls will be made of sustainably-sourced silicone glass.

Bird Island will utilize a grey water recycling system that reuses sink and shower water in order to eliminate waste. Graft Labs had this to say about the upscale, eco-friendly home...

“We have applied an integrated strategy of developing a zero-energy house that seamlessly dovetails the economic and environmental advantages of environmentally friendly living with the needs of a demanding and cosmopolitan clientele. The environmental and economic features of this way of living do not conflict with our client’s lifestyle; rather it furthers their ability to comfortably enjoy their time at home.”

No word on how much the homes on Bird Island will cost, but I'm guessing they won't be cheap.
