Mother’s Day Gift Ideas, Sale and Giveaway!

This Sunday May 12, 2013 is Mother’s Day. It’s a great reminder to take a moment and thank our mother’s, grandmother’s and the mother’s of our children. From birth on, these fabulous women do so much for their families. Keep reading because we’ve got great Mother’s Day gift ideas from 4 different outdoor mom bloggers, a big discount on Sierra Trading Post and even a Mother’s Day Giveaway.

My wife made a rule a few years ago that when she gets flowers for Mother’s Day it actually means that I’m inviting her to go on a shopping spree. Apparently, flowers alone for Mother’s Day is not acceptable in my house. With that in mind, I contacted 4 outdoor adventure bloggers to see what they are hoping for this Mother’s Day.

They happily scoured the Sierra Trading Post site to make their own Mother’s Day Wish List. Check out the outdoor gear and clothing that these outdoor-minded moms have their eye on and keep reading to learn how you can win a $50 gift certificate to Sierra Trading Post.

First up is Amelia, who lives with her husband and two young boys, aged 2 and 4 in Yellowstone National Park. As a family they love to hike, bike, run, ski and play outdoors.  She writes over at Tales of a Mountain Mama in the hopes of inspiring others (through tips, stories, gear reviews and giveaways) to get outside and show the immense benefits of outdoor family play.

Mothers Day Amelia

Amelia assured me that she had drastically cut down her wish list but still came up with the below 7 items. She thought this Big Agnes Sleeping Bag, Stonewear Designs Jacket, Moving Comfort Sports Bra, A JetBoil Cook System, Chaco Sandals, A Cookware System or Craghoppers Pants would make a great gift to help prepare her for her next family adventure.

Next, I reached out to Tiffany, The Campy Mom. Tiffany enjoys tent camping, fishing, hiking and just spending time outdoors with her hubby and 3 kids.  She shares her adventures on her blog, A Little Campy, where she discusses everything from pitchin’ tents to pitchin’ fits. Camping tips, recipes, gear reviews and lots of laughs can be found–around the campfire.

Tiffany jumped at the opportunity to peruse Sierra Trading Post for a few Mother’s Day gift Ideas. She eventually settled on some fun items including the below Columbia Sportswear Jacket, ABO Hammock, Outdoor Research Hat, Columbia Sportswear Shirt, Chaco Sandals, and an Inflatable Kayak.

Our final Outdoorsy Mom is about to become a new mother. Olivia is a contributing writer on  She is expecting her first child sometime in the next two weeks.  When she’s not waddling around like a Thanksgiving Turkey, she likes to teach kids of all ages about science and the outdoors.  She also enjoys hiking where there are no trails, taking pictures of flowers, and evenings spent around campfires (with friends and lots of marshmallows.)

As shown below, Olivia is looking for a camp chair, a hammock, a bag or a warm pair of Sorel boots. Olivia shares more about these Mother’s Day picks on the OutSide Mom Blog.

  • I cook for my wife whatever she wants on mother day and then gave her a pair of Keen flip flops last year. My daughter choose them and I swear she has worn them everyday.

  • The best Mother’s Day present I ever gave my mother was buying a train ticket from Indianapolis to Boston so I could come home from college and surprise her on Mother’s Day. It was fantastic.

  • The best gift I’ve received was a coupon book from my 7 year old. The best gift I’ve given was a small pot I made myself in junior high art class with clay I dug out of the ground myself. It wasn’t pretty, but it was heartfelt! Could very much use a gift certificate from Sierra trading post! Thanks for the opportunity!

    • My best gift for Mother’s Day: sleeping in, a light brunch followed by a surprise hike in the mountains. I’d arranged the sitter and the meals without her knowing at all. She just got to relax and enjoy her day.

  • I received a re-gift of what my father-in-law gave my mother-in-law for her first mother’s day. An amazing drawing of my husband as a baby (he’s an artist) I love it!

  • The best Mother’s Day gifts I’ve ever received were letters from my children that I’ve saved.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there.

  • I drove a few hours last year to get a camper with my husband and son. The whole trip ended up being a crazy adventure. What a great mother’s day!

  • The best Mother’s Day present I ever received was a Mother’s Day hike celebrating my first Mother’s Day as a new mom. My little guy was 2 months old and it was such a special day.

  • The best gift I received was a little necklace that my son bought for me when he was little – I still have it

  • The best gift I think I gave my mom was a phonebook of pictures of our family (her grandkids). And the best gift I have re dived for mother’s day so far was a whole day off for myself, pedicure, facial and massage.

  • One year, when I was in high school, I bought my mom 6 azalea plants and I planted them in the yard for her while she was at work (she was a minister so she always had to work on mother’s day). I have no idea how much the plants cost, but I remember spending hours in the yard clearing space and getting them planted.

  • I gave my wife a trip to Oregon to shop all the outdoor gear and clothing stores in Woodburn. She didn’t buy much til she got home and went on a Sierra Trading Post shopping spree for all the stuff she tried on and liked!

  • The best gift I ever got on Mother’s Day was the first card ever from my daughter, when she was a month old, written by my husband. It totally brought tears to my hormonal eyes :)

  • Best Mother’s Day gift is just having my husband and kids around me. Sounds corny, but true. A bit of free time in the morning to go to the gym, then a family activity (maybe frisbee or a bike ride) and then someone else making dinner and cleaning it up.

  • The best gift i ever gotton for mother’s day was a diamond necklace and dinner to an up scale resturant!

  • Best Mother’s Day gift I ever gave was a brand-spanking new grandchild. I think she appreciated all the planning that went into it.

  • The best Mother’s day gift I’ve given… probably the house painting/scraping party for the exterior of my mom’s house, the new front door, or initiating the raised veggie/fruit garden bed project over this past weekend.

  • Best gift ever – plants for our yard that my son then helped me plant. They’re the gift that keeps giving!

  • My best gift ever was becoming a mom just one day before Mother’s Day almost 12 years ago. This year we celebrate on the same day. My family isn’t big on expensive Mother’s Day gifts; any gift that is time spent together as a family is good!

  • We love our adventures with our son, Jamie and wife Amanda (Dilynn our 3 yr old granddaughter) camping in Yellowstone & Glacier National Park! We fly out from WV to Billings, Montana & the fun begins! Float trips down the Yellowstone River to hiking some of the trails out Glacier! Our life is so much more exciting with our OUTDOOR FAMILY!!!!

  • My mother always says: “EVERY DAY is mother’s day!!” My husband is always trying to get away with buying me pretty things (outdoor things, usually, because… we’re kinda obsessed), and my kids wake me up in the morning telling me how beautiful I am (thanks to my husband’s lovely example) and write me hand-made cards in their free time. I love being a mother. :)

  • The best mother’s day gift I have given was my cap and gown after I graduated from college. She has always been an inspiration and my support system.

  • The best mothers day presents to me are a hand-picked bouquet of flowers from the yard, a hand-drawn card, and the unquestioning willingness of my children to go exploring with me wherever I choose to go that day. Oh, and a soak in a hot spring.

  • The best mothers day gift I’ve received is a newborn baby…my 1st child only one month old. What a blessing!

  • Would use it towards getting my wife one of those reclining chairs. I always try to get my wife something she wants for camping to make it more comfortable. Last year were some Keen sandals

  • The best Mother’s Day gift I have ever received was my Newfie puppy. We recently had to put her down but she was with us for an amazing 11 years <3

  • The best Mother’s Day gift I’ve ever received was a necklace with a silver tag on it with my son’s hand and foot prints on it, his birth stone and his birth date, time and stats engraved on the other side. I wear it all the time.

  • My favorite Mother’s Day gift was from last year. My then kindergartner had spent most the year learning to write and her school curriculum encouraged “sound spelling” (ie, just sound it out and do your best, don’t worry about spelling”.) She wrote a note that included the phrase, “I love pain gas, mom, I rely love pain gas.” I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what she tried to write. I was dying of laughter inside as she “read” her note to me. I learned she had written, “I love playing games mom, I really love playing games.”

  • Please enter me! I’m about to have my first Mother’s Day. My favorite Mother’s Day gift is my son Jackson I had the week after Mother’s Day last year :)

  • My mother is an avid gardener. This year, I sent her all the vegetable starts she would need for her garden: heirloom tomatoes, peppers, and squash. In years past, I’ve sent her gift certificates so she can order plants online. Anything gardening related is appreciated by Mom!

  • I got a Mother’s Ring from my boyz w/their birthstones (1each), mine, and my husbands. I normally don’t ask for anything for mother’s day. They sometimes make me breakfast.

  • shared on FB: for additional entry.

Thank you for the chance to win.

  • The best mothers day gift I got is just being able to be a mother. We tried for over 3 years and being unable to afford fertility or adoption we were becoming more and more distressed. All I have ever wanted in life was to be a mother. I wanted a brood but God saw fit to bless me with just one beutiful daughter. She is my light and joy. Now 17 she is still the best gift I have ever received. Smart, well behaved, kind, giving, motherly herself. She is everything and anything I could ever want in a child. Never having another was ok, have spoiled many in my life path and plan to spoil many more. I am the luckiest woman on planet.

  • My husband makes me a photo mug of my kids every year. I love to see them grow. I have one for every day of the week.

  • The best mother’s day gift I’ve given… hmm, probably the time some friends and I took my two littlest sisters (ages 2 and 4 at the time) off to the mountains to give my mom (and another sister who usually gets stuck babysitting) a break. We hiked around a lake and talked about the fish, found all the different colors of flowers we could, scared cows out of the brush, hiked along a single-track bike trail, and laughed a lot. I sure love being outside with those two littles. My favorite parts of the trip: the brave, quiet look on the four-year-old’s face as she held up her finger, dripping blood (a tiny poke – at home she would’ve freaked out! But “hiker girls are brave!” Makes me proud); and the two-year old holding her very first S’more up to the camera, sticky and grinning. I look forward to the day I can introduce my own littles to the great outdoors, but for now I just take every opportunity to get outside with my little sisters so they’ll learn to love hiking and have fun memories with their oldest sister :)

  • My best mother’s day gift was a hand crafted leaded glass hummingbird my very young children picked out for me. It’s one of my most treasured possessions.

  • The best gift I got was a cot to use when camping with the Cub Scouts. After chasing the kids around the camp all day, it was nice to relax into the cot for a good nights sleep.

  • The best Mothers Day gift I have ever received was the birth of my tow beautiful daughters! It’s not material items that bring me joy, but my family!

  • the best gift is lunch with my son ,daughter-in-law,daughter,son=in=law and my precious four grandchildren, three boys and one my family

  • The best gift to my mom was an annual Mother’s Day tradition of breakfast in bed. My dad would have my two sisters and me make a glittery construction paper crown, pick from the garden and wrap a bouquet of flowers, and make a hot breakfast. My mom would pretend to still be asleep and we kids would burst into the bedroom with a BIG “Happy Mother’s Day!”

  • The best gift was a tiny flower my 2 year old son picked from our lawn saying “Happy Mudder Day” Nothing will ever surpass that :)

  • Best mother’s day gift I have received is a fingerpaint drawing made by my son and his dad for my first mother’s day!
