There are few things we love more than open spaces here at Sierra Trading Post (Maybe giving you great deals!). We are always sharing stories about Yellowstone, Moab, Rocky Mountain National Park and other destinations on the Sierra SocialHub so we are excited to hear that President Obama just added 5 new national monuments into the national park system.
The biggest news out of the five selections is the first ever park in the state of Delaware. Until now, Delaware has been the only state to not be represented in the national park system. The new selection will be known as First State National Monument and will protect an 1,100-acre tract along the Brandywine River, according to the Washington Times
The other selections to the national park system include the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument in Maryland, the Rio Grande del Norte National Conservation Area in New Mexico, the San Juan Islands National Conservation Lands in Washington state, and the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument in Ohio. Find out more information at National Parks Traveler.
National parks and national monument designation gives a boost to local businesses as more people travel to visit the special places preserved within our parks system. The parks also create recreational opportunities for people of all ages and protect the land and waters for future generations to enjoy.
The Rio Grande del Norte, in New Mexico, includes the preservation of habitat for elk, bald eagle, peregrine falcon and the great horned owl as well as many great recreational opportunities including hiking, biking, camping, rafting, hunting and fishing.
These 5 new national monuments added to our national park system were selected for their amazing recreational opportunities as well as a strong ecological and historical significance.
What national park or national monuments do you plan on visiting this year?
